Abstract

There is a tension involved in the creative process which process is important not only to the arts but also to the art of living. For many, for example-those who people Gray's churchyard, this tension is a common experience but one which dies before it comes to fruition in some medium of expression. The artist is one who crosses over this threshold into the realm of artistic expression, and it is this transition which I would like to explore. This paper will be divided into four sections dealing with Jung's view of the psyche, the artist, the creative process, the work of art. I have chosen to begin with Jung's view of the psyche because it is central to his theory of creativity which informs the bulk of this paper.
