Abstract

Civil War military engagements have within than one fleeting, decisive moment upon which defeat or victory hinged. It was not always a dramatically noticeable event-a brillant infantry charge or the courageous defense of an important position against innumerable odds. The outcome of a conflict often was determined by a seemingly insignificant positioning, of a battery of artillery or a decision made by a lone-forgotten division commander. A thorough study of the records will usually divulge this crucial instant of time and action.
