Abstract

The Prologue of the Fourth Gospel is an early Christian hymn stemming from Johannine theological circles, which has been adapted to serve as an overture to the Gospel narrative of the person of the incarnate Word, Jesus Christ. The Prologue is one of the most beautiful, moving and effective statements which we possess in the New Testament on the person of Jesus. But, at the same time, it is one of the most complicated. This essay is an attempt to explore the controversy surrounding the Prologue in order to come to an understanding of it, the difficulties in its composition, structure and purpose.
