Abstract

Secondary education has experienced remarkable growth in the United States. Evidence of this expansion is seen in large cities as well as in small towns. For 1961 the enrollment in the secondary schools was close to 11,000,000. With increased enrollments demanding more teachers, school administrators are confronted with the problem of teacher turnover. In some school systems 25 to 30 percent of the staff are changed each year. In spite of careful administrative planning the rate of teacher turnover is not likely to be decreased as enrollments continue to increase.
