Abstract

The purpose or this experiment was to determine whether or not a systematized method of teaching vocabulary would show a significant gain over the incidental method or enlarging the vocabulary of a group of seventh grade children. The experiment was limited to a single seventh grade class of nineteen pupils and extended over a period of one year. No attempt was made to appraise or evaluate the methods employed during the semester of systematic instruction, nor was it the purpose of this study to determine scientifically what should be included in such a program. The conclusions reached as a result of this experiment were based upon the gains in vocabulary growth evidenced after a semester of systematized training as compared with those of a semester of incidental instruction.
