Abstract
The sixteenth century was marked by conflict: religious, political and national. Heresy swept across the plains of Europe and left in its wake dissension among the leaders and confusion among the people. Intrigue spun its tangled web from court to battlefield, ever seeking the momentary advantage of supremacy. Newly-kindled patriotism emerged, as kings consolidated their claims and increased their holdings.
