Abstract
successfully dealing with mathematical word problems is frequently a puzzle for elementary school children. Students l in the intermediate grades who are thoroughly familiar with basic arithmetic operations, and who have mastered the necessary skills to decode story problems written at their independent reading levels, find difficulty in deciding which mathematical processes to apply in order to correctly solve a given story problem. The recognition of problem solving as the mathematical skill most in need of attention has been prioritized in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and by the president of the National council of Teachers of Mathematics (NATM).
